Elizabeth Lennox

Interview with Liz Scott

Hello!  And thanks for dropping in!  I’d like to introduce you to Ms. Liz Scott, author of The Royal Vow Series and, her latest effort, You Promised Me Forever.  Very funny lady – read on to learn more about Ms. Scott.

What were your expectations when you first started writing?

I had no expectations. All I had was an innocent and naive desire above all else to make my dream come true and write a few paragraphs that didn’t stink. Writing was always there, in the back of my mind probably since middle school. Actually following through, was a totally different matter. It’s scary to look your dream in the face and say “This is it!”

If I try it and I fail, then I have to put the period at the end of that dream. I know you don’t like hearing this because you always tell me I’m the one that did it. But without your encouragement and nudging, I never would have written the first sentence. And I certainly wouldn’t have written my first book, Sweet Surrender.

How have your expectations changed over time?

I’m feeling a little more comfortable in saying, “I write contemporary romance”.  I can now actually look people in the eye when I say it!

What would you say to a new author – someone who hasn’t released anything yet?

Build your connections and your web presence before you publish. If you can’t afford a webpage (I couldn’t at first), then get a free “Blogger” account and start blogging. Check out other authors’ blogs in your genre. Facebook and Twitter are great ways to build friendships and support.  The lessons you’ll learn will be invaluable to you. If you don’t know how to do something, do a YouTube or a Google search. Most everything I’ve learned has been through contacts I’ve made or YouTube.

If you go into your first release with an established web presence, you will be way ahead of the game. I didn’t have this when I published my first book. I think I had 5 Facebook followers and 3 of those were family!

What questions would you ask of a seasoned author?

Knowing what you do now, as a seasoned author, what would you do differently if you could go back to the beginning of your writing career?

What do you attribute your success as an author to?

I hope you’re going to answer this, Ms. Lennox.

From EL:  I wouldn’t change a thing!  It has been a brutal, wonderful, horrible, exciting adventure.  Learning to publish, building up an audience and meeting new people has been the most amazing, fabulous and terrifying journey.

To what do I attribute my success?  Dumb luck!  😉

In a perfect world, describe your office.  Why would you use certain items in your office?

My perfect office, which I don’t have at the current time, would be a quiet and inspirational place where all my “friends” (my paperback book collection) would surround me on shelves where I could revisit them at any time. Just looking at the names of my favorite authors and then thinking that I have books authored by me on my digital bookshelf is a surreal moment for me.

My “reclaimed wood and metal” desk would have two monitors (because one is never enough) with a cut-glass dish of plain M&M’s sitting on top. I’d have a tea station tucked into a corner with a can of my favorite mint tea and honey.

And of course, I’d have a big comfy chair where I could sit and read for inspiration or contemplate a difficult character or scene. Did I mention the ocean view outside my floor to ceiling windows?

When you write, do you wear anything special?

LOL? Really? Well, I try to always wear clothes. I have been known to get up early to do some writing, then become totally involved in a scene and find myself still in my pajamas at noon! Of course this happens only on my days off.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve done to figure out a story?

Somebody told me to lay on the floor in a quiet room and stare at the ceiling. Instead I email my writing buddy and annoy her until inspiration strikes! She is so demanding sometimes.

From EL:  Ahem!  This works for me ALL THE TIME!  And it has the added benefit of creeping out my children!  Bonus!

Here’s your chance – what do you want to say to your readers?

The most important thing I want to say to my readers is, thank you. Thank you for taking a chance on an unknown author and buying my books. Thank you for supporting me by writing reviews or sharing my posts with your friends. As an Indie author, reader support is so very important. Whether it’s my books or another author’s book you’ve enjoyed, it only takes a small amount of time to write a review and share their books on social media. It’s a little thing that means so very much.

Thank you for the emails and posts you write telling me how much you enjoyed a particular character, scene, or story. Those make my day and make me heart happy.

Along those same lines, what’s the most important thing, in your mind, that readers need to know about either you personally or your story?

Personally, I’m painfully shy and if we were at a party together you’d never notice me. I’d be hiding behind a plant and leave at the earliest opportunity. (From EL:  Just so you ladies know – I would be right there with her!  That plant needs to be big enough to hide both of us – and any of you who want to hang out with us!  We could be a very goofy, shy group!)  However, if I get to know you I’m a totally different and uncontrollable beast. My friends are probably laughing over that last sentence.

As far as my stories go, I’m going to interpret this as my latest work in progress. Since January 2015, I began working on a book which became an labor of love for me.  I have been working on You Promised me Forever off and on in between writing my Royal Vow stories.

You Promised Me Forever is a love story that begins when Nic (Nicole) and Will meet as children through horrible circumstances. Their love grows and matures through the years and develops into what Nicole thought would be forever. Something really bad happens and shakes the very foundation of Nicole’s life. Years later they meet again and…

LOL! Sorry, no spoilers here.

I’ve submitted You Promised Me Forever into the Amazon Kindle Scout program. I’m crossing my fingers and toes that readers will like the premise of the story enough to nominate the book to receive a publishing contract. If my book is selected, you will automatically WIN A free Kindle copy of You Promised Me Forever.
