“Come on in.  Dinner is almost ready.  Would you like a glass of wine?  I have beer too.”

He paused, looking around.  “Wine or beer?  Where’s Anthony?  I was under the impression that you don’t drink when he’s around.” 

He placed a package on the countertop. 

Brantlee looked in the bag.  “What’s this?”

“Brantlee,” he said, a warning note to his voice now.  “Where’s Anthony?  Usually he’s already here to greet me.  Enthusiastically and trying to convince me to convince you to let him get a dog.”

She laughed, feeling self-conscious so she crossed her arms over her stomach.  “I…uh…asked my neighbor to watch him tonight.”  Her lips pulled back into a cringe.  “I didn’t mean to assume anything.  I just…I wanted…” she couldn’t finish the statement. 

He took a step closer.  “Please tell me that you wanted to be alone with me tonight,” he demanded, his voice deeper.  Huskier.  His eyes were bright with the hope and need.  “Tell me so I don’t assume anything.”

Her mouth opened and closed as she stared up into his dark eyes.  “I was hoping to have some time alone with you, Lex.  But I…well…if you think of me as just a friend, that’s good too.”  It would hurt, but she’d survived through worse crushed dreams and she’d get through this.

But before she had a chance to take a breath after that statement, he was right there, his hands on her hips as he pulled her into his arms. 

“I want you, Brantlee!
